A Lifetime Passed

This marks the fifth time an Ori Toor creation has been shared on this webzone which I’m fairly certain makes him Our Most Featured Artist™. If you’re reading this in the far-distant future go ahead and check his feed, chances are I’ve posted more of his stellar animation since.

The attached is even more representational than Ori’s last outing for Kingdom Crumbs (my choice for best video of the past calendar year), a trend I’m über-thrilled he’s continuing to explore. His trademark undulations are even more intriguing when they’re evolving from pure abstract blobs into foxes or ghoulish faces (or fish or worms or elephants or…) and then back again.

As usual, Ori takes his cue to progress the visuals from compositional shifts in the backing music and Vial of Sound‘s ragged bass synth, square wave lead and mysterious, vocoded vocals are a natural fit for his style.

So yeah, top marks all the way ‘round so turn the lights turned down, the volume way up and get these bits loaded full screen in HD.

ENJOY!

P.S. Ori’s style of animation is fundamentally satisfying to me so if you’re a band/artist that wants to get featured on the site, I’d suggest hiring him to direct your next video.

Evoking Spirits

“I’m-still-swimming-in-that-language,
it’s multi-versal; pages and journals.
My journey here is ended soon –
we blow eternal.

My mind expands
      with widening strands
      of indigo and purple.
This music’s not commericial,
just the-square-to-meet-that-circle.”

We’ve been watching Ori Toor make shit since first discovering the ‘unofficial’ music video he created for Animal Collective’s Lion in a Coma. Since then he’s made a few more and each exhibit his distinct ‘stream of consciousness’ style of staggered-and-repeating organic, undulating shapes. Ori’s approach has subtely shifted in each of them but they’ve all, for the most part, remained abstract studies in colorful form. The attached, his latest, veers into new territory and I’m absolutely loving how he’s mixed in some representational imagery to compliment the usual assortment of evolving, fluid structures.

It’s my favorite Ori-joint yet and easily an ‘instant classic’ of the site…it’d be a crime to watch this in anything but full-screen HD. Oh and a nice pair of bass-friendly headphones is a must, too; Kingdom Crumbs knows how to properly fatten-up the bottom end of their kicks and basslines and you’ll want to rattle-and-bathe in each one.

Speaking of which, I picked up their eponymous album this morning and have been listening to it while I cobble together this post. It’s thoughtful, positive, mellow, rambling-in-a-good-way hip-hop undergirded by some spacey, out-there synthesizers and easily worth the ten bucks in iTunes. If you’re strapped for cash, head over to Bandcamp and name-your-price; even the most frugal of budgets can accommdate a few cents, right?

ENJOY!

Film Flash

“A promotional video for dublab.com - a non-profit web radio collective from L.A. for their 12th anniversary.”

Our boy Ori lent his signature undulating animation style to this video commissioned by dublab.com to celebrate their twelfth anniversary. Sit back, relax and let Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood Ferguson‘s In Space Remix of Jay Dee and Illa J‘s Sounds Like Love carry you away with the help of some fantastic, colorful visuals. Enjoy!

Alsatian Darn

“Found a way and I feel like I shouldn’t let go;
Drop a bomb on the spots where my doubt streams grow.
What to do when the things that I want don’t allow,
For the handful of mouths that I’m trying to feed.”

Ori Toor – the super talented dude behind Lion in a Comawrote in to let us know about another ‘unofficial’ video he just created for the fantastically ethereal Alsatian Darn by Panda Bear. It’s chock-full of abstract undulating organic shapes that serve as a wonderful soup to the tune’s dreamy, meandering sandwich. In other words: a multi-sensory feast for the eyes and ears. Make sure this shit’s not just full-screen but 1080p full screen. Grab your headphones, too.

We love what you’re up to, Ori; thanks so much for writing in! Oh, and a big thanks goes to one of our regular readers/contributors, Sam Lillard, who also suggested we check out this same video. Cheers!

Lion in a Coma

We’re absolutely loving Ori Toor‘s final illustration project from the Shenkar School of Engineering and Design. He describes it as a ‘stream of consciousness animation’ that was pieced together frame-by-frame in flash sans any script or prior planning. It’s just marvelous, fluid and über-trippy. Full screen and headphones are a must folks. Tunes by Animal Collective.

A big thanks goes to Aaron Smith for another great submission. Cheers!
